Negotiating the price of a car at the dealership can be a very intimidating process.  But now, because of the Internet, there is no longer a compelling reason for a showroom showdown.  In fact, by skipping the dealership you’ll not only be able to avoid high pressure sales tactics but you’ll get a better price at the same time.

You’ll want to do a couple of test drives and figure out which car you want before you start the negotiation process.  When you’re ready to begin, email multiple car dealers and ask them to compete with each other.  You won’t have to buy a car online, but you can settle on a low price before going to the dealership to sign paperwork and pay for your car.

Email negotiating can be broken down into four simple steps:

1. Get free car price quotes
Use a price quote service and up to five local car dealers will email you offers.  You’ll be able to select which dealers you want to hear from and they’ll usually respond within 24 hours.

2. Get specifics
Most of the emails you receive from car dealers will be advertisements.  But that doesn’t matter because all you really want is a salesperson contact from each dealership.  Once you know who to talk to, send an email  asking for a clear price quote.

3. Compare quotes
Track all your responses in a spreadsheet to compare car quotes.  To prepare for negotiations, order each quote from most expensive to least expensive.

4. Ask dealers to beat your best price
Email each dealer and ask them, “Can you beat this price?”  Work your way down the list of dealers starting with the one who provided the most expensive quote.   As you ask each dealer to beat your best offer, be sure to keep updating that “best offer” when a dealer responds with a new, lower price.

When you’ve reached a satisfactory price, ask the dealer to email you with the VIN number and the final “out the door price” so you have something in writing. When you are finished, you should have a great deal on a new car!
